Walt Whitman

Poet and Nurse Walt Whitman

“Be curious, not judgmental” ~ Walt Whitman
Walt Whitman was an American poet from New York during the Civil War era. He grew up with little education and a large array of jobs, most that had to do with writing. His writing often countered cultural views and one ever got him fired from his job. When the war broke out, Waltman moved south. He worked in Washington, D.C. as a clerk and would spend his time with soldiers, helping them heal. Whitman suffered a stroke and was forced to move to New Jersey with his brother. Like most poets, Whitman was not popular until post-death. Whitman is now regarded as one of the first true American writers.
